Maryland Renaissance Festival, Oct. 9-10, 2004

The weather was here, wish you were beautiful.

The Romance Wars seemed subtle this year, perhaps cooled with the temperatures and soothing sights of autumn leaves a’fallin’. E.J.’s bouquet of roses bloomed from his pipe drone which is a far sight better than the ignited, burned, and smashed rose sent to him last week. It seems E.J. really has smitten all the ladies at faire, well, and apparently some of the psychos too.

Rogue friends and Kilt&Hilt dancers Warring and Holly were setting hearts-a-thumping this week too as Holly took the opportunity to wear her never-seen-the-church-doors wedding dress out for a little faire action and even got her groove shoes moving in it. It seems some thin-brained loser decided not to carry through with wedding plans and left her with a wedding dress fit to thrill, so why not wear it. We all appreciated it. Warring and Holly have been giving it there all of late tearing up the dance floor in Highland style, from Celtic Crossroads to anytime we play the right jigs and reels, but Sunday they brought out some exciting new developments and shimmied into some belly-revealing bellydancers digs. At one point they joined in with Turbans, Tassels and Tattoos Dancing Dragon Dancers and we had a bevy of bellies rocking the house. Holly also brought along her mom and mom’s boyfriend who in turn brought along his djembe drum and did a little rocking at the Dragon Inn Show.

With the fantastic weather and lovely ladies, the crowds were so thick you couldn’t squeeze your cheeks together without pinching someone. And to boot, it was the birthday of our very own Rock, Jimmy Mitchell, who turned on to the ripe old age of 30 something. There were beers and pumpkin pies throughout the day for the Rock of pipedom but you can’t have a birthday near a Rogues stage without having someone bleat out “Happy Birthday” on the bagpipes and who better to play the tune than Jimmy himself. I guess it saved him from having to stand there with nothing to do.

Our after faires were pretty light as only a small group gathered on Saturday night, and most left early to go home and catch some much needed rest, though from what I hear, Sunday was a wild night at Jillian’s for a cast of Rennies and Rogues, while Saturday night the Rogues and Kilt&Hilt tuckered out and headed home early, leaving my lovely bride and I to sit in a parking lot talking to Roguishly beautiful and talented Stacy of Dancing Dragon fame. We talked about farting, menstruation, buying women and 101 ways to wear a turban – you know, the regular stuff.

Rogues Lite is heading out for another midweek gig aboard the USS Constellation tallship in the Inner Harbor of Baltimore for a political fundraiser on Thursday as the guys chant out some rhythms for the tartans, turbans, tassels, and tattoos of the Dancing Dragon shimmy shakers. Look for the details of the show in our next edition of On the Road.
